The Perfect Overnight Getaway

Often we get wrapped up in our busy schedules and focus on a crazy day to day happenings in our lives to where we forget to enjoy life. Every couple month I try to plan a one tank getaway for King Thrifty and I. Recently we took a one tank trip to Cincinnati, Ohio. We stayed downtown at a beautiful hotel, enjoyed dinner at a fantastic restaurant. I won’t spill all the beans here so let me tell you in detail so you can plan your next trip to Cincinnati, with ideas and plans already in place.

Our first stop was the Hampton Inn Downtown Cincinnati to my surprise the hotel lobby area, lounge and entrance were beautifully decorated and well kept. The Hampton Inn Downtown Cincinnati had a touch of class that you usually would find when visiting a four or five-star hotel. The front desk staff greeted me with a smile and provided maps along with snacks and beverage for us to enjoy during our stay. We had planned to explore a couple of attractions before dinnertime, so we dropped off our luggage took a tour of our room which was nice and comfortable.

Our next stop was the Ultimate Queen City Underground Tour which provided a lot of useful information about the history and heritage of the Cincinnati. We took a stroll through Over-the-Rhine, home to America’s largest collection 19th-century historic buildings. The guide shared stories with us that gave fun facts about the 130 saloons, bars, beer gardens, and theaters that hosted iconic entertainers like Buffalo Bill Cody. I enjoyed the underground tunnels which were vital to Cincinnati’s brewery heritage. On the final leg of the tour, we will travel explored tunnels that recently opened for the first time in nearly 100 years. The last stop was at the Christian Moerlein bottling plant and tap room.

From the tour, we headed over to the Newport Aquarium to check out the stingray hideaway, penguins, sharks, sea turtles, and so much more. I love visiting different aquariums there is always so much to see and learn. I enjoyed the interactive activities, and the shark bridge was fantastic. The Newport Aquarium is an aquarium located in Newport, Kentucky at Newport on the Levee. The aquarium has 70 exhibits and 14 galleries, including five seamless acrylic tunnels totaling over 200 feet in length.

Fun Facts About Newport Aquarium

After leaving the Newport Aquarium it was time for dinner, so we headed across the bridge to the Montgomery Inn Boathouse. The Montgomery Inn has an impressive view of the Ohio River, so when you make your reservation remember to request a window seat. Montgomery Inn is close to downtown near the shopping, entertainment, and nightlife. Montgomery Inn is known for their delicious finger licking ribs I had to make sure we were ready to eat our share. During our visit, we didn’t waste any time deciding what to order by the time the server made it over to us I was ready. For starters, we ordered the Ribs King Sampler which is a combination of our Gulf Shrimp Cantonese, Wings, and four Mini Crab Cakes, each with a special sauce.

For dinner, we ordered from the create-your-own combo menu my two meat choices were the hand cut extra thick pork chop and the smoked ribs with a green beans. King Thrifty ordered the duck, original ribs along with a side of green beans and coleslaw. For dessert, we shared a slice of strawberry cheesecake and key line pie. The food was fantastic, so if your ever in the Cincinnati area stop by and enjoy some of the best food in town.

After a quick romantic stroll through the Little Miami Scenic Trail, we decided to head back to the hotel. The lounge, bar, and meeting areas of the hotel were stunning we observed while waiting for a refreshing cocktail. The business center was also very nice and had a small reception area with a table and eight chairs. The Hampton Inn downtown Cincinnati was a beautiful hotel the perfect location for a romantic evening.

  4. Such a fun and nice evening it looks like you had. I really enjoy simple getaways removed of any complexity. I don’t mind planning, but sometimes it’s nice to get away somewhere that doesn’t require too much advanced prep. 🙂

  5. I was just in Cincinnati last weekend for a family reunion! I stayed in the Blue Ash area but I wish that I had stayed downtown – next time I will make sure that I do. Both times I have been to Cincinnati I have missed the Underground Tour, but I will have to make sure that I do it on my next trip 😀

  8. Being from Ohio and of all the times I’ve been to Cinci I haven’t heard of the tour or the aquarium, weird. This post made me feel like I need to plan another Cinci trip pronto and take it in as a tourist!

  9. This is such a great idea. I need to do this with my husband. All our trips include travel with the kids so we never really get a day off.
I do love this and the fact that you can drive away and recharge for the night without feeling any guilt for being away from the kids.
